Two races booked

It’s been too long since my last post. Work and life have been busy, and hitting the road has been tougher than ever.

But worry not: I’m still running.

In fact, Kate and I registered last weekend for two races. We’ll run the Gobbler Grind Half Marathon with Maggie on November 18 in Corporate Woods in Overland Park, Kan., and all five Beems will run the Thanksgiving Day 5K on November 22 on the Sprint World Headquarters Campus in Overland Park.

I’m really looking forward to both outings: Our family has run the Thanksgiving race the last two years, but this will be our first half marathon with Maggie. She just finished the cross country season and is sure to smoke her parents.

We ran the Rock the Parkway Half Marathon earlier this year with Tom and look forward to doing a 13.1-miler soon with Joe. My last race was the Garmin Marathon in April in Olathe, Kan., which I hope to repeat next year.

I’ve found it difficult to log weekly miles since the marathon. My busy schedule has made it tougher than ever to exercise. What’s more, it’s always hard to run in summer in Kansas City because of the intense heat and humidity. And if those weren’t enough, I’ve continued struggling with tendonitis in my right foot, an injury I discussed in an earlier post.

In recent weeks, though, Kansas City’s summer heat has given way to cooler fall days. My schedule has offered up several running windows with the dropping temperatures, and the Saucony Ride 5s are definitely helping the right foot.

The result: Some great pre-race runs.

Earlier this month, Kate and I logged a scenic eight-miler in northern Independence on a route that swung through the picturesque Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Eucharist convent and retreat center. Last Saturday, we posted an easy nine-miler, combining parts of two regular routes and keeping our heart rates low by running long and slow.

On Monday, I took advantage of a window in my work day and got in a hilly 8.5-miler. The difficult route, which included a west-to-east sweep of the picturesque Rock Creek Trail connecting Rotary and Country Club parks in Independence, pushed me to my limits.

We plan to log an 11-mile run this weekend and a 13-miler the following weekend before our pre-race taper. We’re running our upcoming half marathon for fun, so our compressed training plan should be sufficient.
