Two great runs in Londontown

I suspect the handful of you who follow Kansas City Runner had begun to wonder if I’d abandoned the blog and running altogether. ‘Tis not the case; between Boy and Cub scout camp, family vacation and business travel, summer’s simply been a blur.

This newly minted 42-year-old is absolutely still running. I sneak in early morning and late night jaunts on neighborhood routes, in hotel fitness centers and — when the running gods are with me — on paths of interest in cities where business travel takes me.

The Notting Hill Tube Station is safe and convenient.

I notched a pair of lifetime runs earlier this month in the Big Smoke. Work took me to London for a professional conference on July 5 and 6, and the Beem clan — ever an enterprising lot — stretched the stay into a summer vacation.

First, let me tell you about our digs. We rented a great flat in Notting Hill, which is even more than the movie makes it out to be. Just two blocks from the tube station, we were close to great restaurants, cool shops and historic Kensington Gardens.

Our flat in Campden Hill Mansions was perfect.

Check out the flat at If you’re traveling domestically or abroad and want to rent an apartment for your stay, I highly recommend Vacation Rentals by Owner ( We rented a flat through it last year in Avignon, France and were equally satisfied.

The temperatures during our time in London never climbed above 80, so it was ideal for running. And as chance would have it, our flat was a half-mile from the northwestern Kensington Gardens entrance.

Hyde Park features plenty of benches and private places to run or relax.

No sane runner could resist.

My first route was a loop around the perimeter of Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, which abuts the gardens’ eastern border. The full circle ( was exactly six miles.

My second run covered a nine-mile course in the parks ( I got adventurous and decided to explore Hyde Park’s interior, a great decision that exposed me to off-the-beaten path parts of the urban green space.

Kensington Gardens is stately yet inviting, offering a new experience each time you visit.

If you’re ever in London, I would highly recommend staying in Notting Hill near Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. Whether you’re a runner, biker or simply want to take a memorable stroll, you won’t be disappointed.

Happy running!

Sigh. I wish we were still there.
