Charted a new route today

The Rock the Parkway Half Marathon ( is three weeks away. With a sunny, 57-degree Saturday in Kansas City — and a relatively unscheduled one to boot (a rarity in our family these days) — I decided to log my LSD run today instead of tomorrow. (For those unfamiliar with running jargon, LSD stands for Long Slow Distance, not the hallucinogenic that swept the nation in the 1960s.)

Only one problem: My training plan ( suggested a 15k race for this weekend’s LSD run.

I didn’t even check the Mid-America Running Association’s online event schedule ( There’s been no time lately to hunt down — much less register and pick up the packet for — a race.

Not to worry, though. I’ve still got a few creative ideas left in me.

I got on Gmaps Pedometer ( and charted a new route. I look forward to running the course I plotted on many more sunny weekend afternoons.

Those who’ve driven to the northern terminus of Noland Road in Independence know of a community jewel hidden to many. It’s the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Eucharist convent and retreat center ( I’d always wanted to run through it and decided today was the perfect day to check it off my bucket list.

Those who’ve visited the setting know if its beauty. It sits back  from the road. The long entry drive crowns a hill as it passes through fields that are planted in the growing season before reaching a circle drive surrounded by buildings and offices.

I dont’ think I was trespassing; there weren’t signs forbidding my entrance. I’ll definitely return to the convent and retreat center at 2100 N. Noland Road on future runs and, if asked to leave, will do so respectfully.

I’m glad I changed things up today and visited the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Eucharist convent and retreat center. I combined the new route ( with pieces of others to log the roughly 9.3 miles needed to hit 15 kilometers.

I hope your weekend LSD run was as enjoyable as mine. Comment on this blog and tell me about it.

Happy running!
