A glorious day on the road

Kansas City’s mercury hit 61 degrees Sunday. It was the perfect day for a road run.

I glanced out my bedroom window as I cinched my running shorts. I donned a long-sleeved Under Armour shirt in case the wind picked up.

Then I hit the streets, eager to rediscover my roots. With the recent weeks’ blizzards and near-zero temperatures, it had been nearly a month since I’d pounded the pavement.

I needed a fix.

And I found it. As I pushed through my standard six-mile route, the splits fell away smoothly, a welcomed dividend of the winter’s treadmill drudgery.

I’d logged intervals. Speed work. Tempo runs.

I’m training for Kansas City’s Rock the Parkway Half-Marathon (http://www.rocktheparkway.com/) on April 2. My goal is to finish in under 1:50, so every day counts.

I’d visualized my return to the pavement the previous week as the snow piled deeper. Sunday’s street run was enjoyable and fulfilling.

Still, there’s plenty of time to make or break my performance. Six weeks remain before Rock the Parkway.

Yet I’m feeling good about my prospects. A big reason for my optimism is last weekend’s positive pavement experience.

Did you log miles this week in balmy Kansas City or elsewhere? How was your run?

Happy running!
